Multimodal Transportation of Lithium Batteries (49 CFR, TDGR, ADR, IMDG, ICAO/IATA) – English 2024

Multimodal Transportation of Lithium Batteries is intended for the training of hazmat employees responsible for the handling, shipping, or transportation of fully regulated and excepted lithium batteries by all modes using domestic and international regulations such as 49 CFR, TDGR, ADR, the IMDG Code and the IATA DGR. It explains the various types of battery technology in use today and has been designed to meet the function-specific training requirements of the regulations. It can be used for both initial and recurrent function-specific training.
Multimodal Transportation of Lithium Batteries meets the regulatory training standards set out in the 49 CFR (Part 172, Subpart H), TDG Regulations (Part 6), IMDG Code (Part 1, Chapters 1.3 and 1.4), ADR (Part 1, Chapters 1.3 & 1.10), and IATA DGR (Section 1.5), for all dangerous goods employees involved in the safe transportation of lithium batteries and includes all recent amendments.

Safe and Compliant Transportation of Excepted Lithium Batteries by Ground is intended for the training of hazmat employees responsible for the handling, shipping, or transportation of excepted lithium batteries by ground (road or rail) and air, using 49 CFR and the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR). It explains the various types of battery technology in use today and has been designed to meet the function-specific training requirements of the regulations for excepted lithium batteries and can be used for both initial and recurrent training.

Lithium battery types covered in this course include:

  • Lithium Ion Cells & Batteries
    • Small (all modes) – Not to exceed 20 Wh/cell or 100 Wh/battery
    • Medium (ground only) – Not to exceed 60 Wh/cell or 300 Wh/battery
  • Lithium Metal Cells & Batteries
    • Small (all modes) – Not to exceed 1 g lithium/cell or 2 g lithium/battery
    • Medium (ground only) – Not to exceed 5 g lithium/cell or 25 g lithium/battery

The course meets the regulatory training standards set out in 49 CFR, Part 172, Subpart H, for all employees involved in the safe transportation of lithium batteries by ground and includes all recent amendments and interpretations.

The course meets the regulatory training standards set out in the IATA DGR, Section 1.6 (as well as those in the 49 CFR, Part 172, Subpart H) for all dangerous goods employees involved in the safe transportation of excepted lithium batteries by ground and air and includes all recent amendments.
